Static Electricity & Electric Fields

Static electricity forms when charges get stuck in one place and can't move freely - that's why it's called "static." You've probably experienced this when pulling off a jumper or rubbing a balloon on your hair.

When you rub certain insulating materials together, friction literally scrapes electrons off one material and dumps them onto the other. Here's the key bit: only electrons move, never protons. This leaves one material positively charged (lost electrons) and the other negatively charged (gained electrons).

If too much charge builds up, the potential difference (PD) between the charged object and Earth becomes massive. When this happens, electrons can actually jump across air gaps, creating those dramatic sparks you sometimes see. The spark always travels from positive to negative as electrons find their way home.

Electric fields surround any charged object, and they're where the real action happens. Opposite charges attract, like charges repel, and these forces get weaker as distance increases. Think of it like an invisible force field that can actually move objects around.
