Energy Transfer by Conduction and Infrared Radiation
Conduction is how thermal energy travels through solid materials - think of touching a metal spoon in hot soup! Metals are brilliant conductors because their electrons can move freely, which is why copper heats up faster than steel, and both heat up much quicker than wood or glass.
The secret lies in thermal conductivity - materials with high thermal conductivity transfer energy rapidly, whilst those with low thermal conductivity make excellent insulators. When you want to keep heat in (or out), choose materials with low thermal conductivity and make them as thick as practically possible.
Infrared radiation works completely differently - it doesn't need materials to travel through at all! The hotter an object gets, the more infrared radiation it pumps out every second. Everything around you right now is both emitting and absorbing this invisible energy.
Key Insight: A black body absorbs all radiation that hits it, making it the perfect theoretical radiator for scientists to study.
Specific Heat Capacity and Building Insulation
When objects emit and absorb infrared radiation at exactly the same rate, their temperature stays constant - it's like a perfectly balanced energy budget. But tip that balance, and temperatures start changing rapidly.
Specific heat capacity tells you exactly how much energy you need to warm up 1kg of any substance by 1°C. The formula Energy = mass × specific heat capacity × temperature change lets you calculate heating costs or cooking times with precision.
Modern homes use clever insulation techniques to slash energy bills: loft insulation traps warm air, double glazing creates air barriers, and aluminium foil behind radiators reflects heat back into rooms. Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between brick layers, dramatically reducing heat loss.
Real-World Tip: Thicker external walls with low thermal conductivity materials can cut heating costs by up to 35% compared to traditional single-layer walls.
