Understanding Electricity: Circuits, Symbols, and the National Grid

Circuit Types and Current Flow
Parallel circuits have multiple loops, which means if one component breaks, the others keep working - that's why your house lights don't all go out when one bulb fails! In these circuits, voltage stays the same across each branch, but current gets shared between the different paths.
Series circuits are simpler - everything connects in one single loop. The downside? If one component breaks, the whole circuit stops working. Here, current stays the same everywhere, but the battery's voltage gets shared between all components.
The key difference to remember: parallel circuits split current but keep voltage constant, whilst series circuits split voltage but keep current constant. Components with higher resistance in parallel circuits will take a smaller share of the current.
Quick Tip: Use V=IR to solve most circuit problems - voltage equals current times resistance!
Circuit Components and Symbols
You'll need to recognise standard circuit symbols for your exams. Key ones include: cells (provide power), ammeters (measure current, placed in series), voltmeters (measure potential difference, placed in parallel), resistors, LEDs, and different types of switches.
Thermistors change resistance with temperature, whilst Light Dependent Resistors (LDRs) change resistance based on light intensity. These variable components are really useful in automatic systems like street lights or temperature controls.
Diodes are one-way valves for electricity - current can only flow through them in one direction. This makes them perfect for converting alternating current to direct current in electronic devices.
Mains Electricity and Safety
Mains electricity in the UK uses alternating current at 50 hertz and 230 volts. Your household appliances connect using three-core cables: the brown live wire (230V), blue neutral wire (0V), and green/yellow earth wire (0V for safety).
The National Grid transfers electricity from power stations to your home efficiently by using very high voltages and low currents through the transmission lines. Step-up transformers increase voltage at power stations, whilst step-down transformers reduce it to safe levels for household use.
Safety devices protect you from electrical dangers. Fuses contain thin wire that melts and breaks the circuit if too much current flows. Earth wires provide an alternative path for current if something goes wrong, preventing the metal casing of appliances from becoming dangerously live.
