Electric Circuits Basics

Electric current is simply electrons flowing from one place to another - think of it like water flowing through pipes. Metal acts as a conductor because it lets electricity flow through it easily, which is why electrical wires are made of copper or other metals.

You can build a simple circuit using just a few components: a cell (battery), a light bulb, and a switch, all connected with wires. When the switch is closed, electrons flow in a complete loop from the battery, through the bulb (making it light up), and back to the battery.

Series circuits arrange components in a single loop. Here's the catch - if there's any break in the circuit, the electrons can't flow at all. This is why old-fashioned fairy lights were frustrating: one broken bulb meant the entire string went dark!

Parallel circuits offer multiple paths for electrons to travel. If one bulb breaks, the others keep working because electrons can still flow through the other branches. Modern Christmas lights use this design, so you don't lose the whole string when one bulb fails.

Quick Tip: Remember series as "single path" and parallel as "multiple paths" - this will help you identify circuit types instantly!

Resistance determines how easily electrons can flow through different materials. Some conductors create more resistance than others, which affects how much current flows through the circuit.
