The Atom's Evolution: P4 Overview

Development of the Model of the Atom
Back in the 1800s, John Dalton had a brilliant but simple idea - what if all matter was made of tiny, solid spheres? He called these spheres atoms and suggested different elements were just different types of these solid balls.
Fast forward to 1897, and JJ Thomson shook things up completely. Through his experiments, he discovered that atoms weren't solid at all - they contained tiny negatively charged particles called electrons! His "Plum Pudding Model" imagined the atom as a ball of positive charge with electrons dotted throughout, like raisins in a pudding.
But Thomson's model didn't last long. In 1909, Ernest Rutherford conducted his famous gold foil experiment, firing alpha particles at a thin sheet of gold. Most particles passed straight through, but some bounced back - proving there was a dense, positively charged centre. This led to his Nuclear Model, with a compact nucleus surrounded by electrons in a cloud.
There was just one problem with Rutherford's model - nothing stopped the electrons from crashing into the nucleus! Niels Bohr solved this in 1913 by proposing that electrons orbit the nucleus in fixed shells, like planets around the sun. Finally, James Chadwick completed the picture by discovering neutrons in the nucleus alongside protons.
