Understanding Density
Density is simply mass per volume - it tells you how much stuff is crammed into a given space. The formula is straightforward: ρ = m/v .
Think of it like comparing a bag of feathers to a bag of lead of the same size. The lead bag has much higher density because there's more mass packed into the same volume.
You can rearrange this formula depending on what you're trying to find. Need volume? Use v = m/ρ. Need mass? Use m = ρv. The maths is pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
Quick tip: Always check your units! Density problems often trip students up because of unit confusion, so make sure everything matches up before you start calculating.
Floating and Sinking
Here's where density gets really interesting - it determines whether objects float or sink! Water has a density of 1000 kg/m³, which is your key reference point.
If something has lower density than water, it floats. Higher density? It sinks. Same density? It suspends perfectly in the middle. This is why oil floats on water and why rocks sink.
Upthrust is the upward force that fluids exert on objects. When you put something in water, it pushes back with a force equal to the weight of fluid displaced. The bigger the object (or the part that's underwater), the greater the upthrust.
Real-world connection: This is exactly how ships work - they're designed so their overall density (including all the air space inside) is less than water, even though they're made of steel!
Calculating Upthrust
The upthrust formula is: Upthrust = density of fluid × volume displaced × gravity. This tells you exactly how much upward force the water provides.
When something floats, there's a perfect balance - the weight of the object equals the upthrust. This means you can work out how much of a floating object sits below the surface.
For floating objects, only part of them displaces water. A wooden raft doesn't need to displace its entire volume - just enough to create an upthrust equal to its weight.
Exam strategy: Remember that floating problems always involve setting weight equal to upthrust. This gives you the equation you need to solve for the unknown quantity.
