Foundation Physics: Understanding Electromagnetic Waves

The Electromagnetic Spectrum
Electromagnetic waves are all around us, and they're far more important to your daily life than you might think! From radio waves with wavelengths of 10⁴m right down to gamma rays at 10⁻¹⁵m, these waves form a continuous spectrum that powers our modern world.
All electromagnetic waves share some key features that make them unique. They're transverse waves, which means they oscillate perpendicular to the direction they're travelling - imagine a wave moving forward whilst vibrating up and down. As you move across the spectrum, there's a clear pattern: frequency increases whilst wavelength decreases.
The spectrum includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays. Radio waves and microwaves are your communication heroes - they carry mobile phone signals, WiFi, and radio broadcasts. Meanwhile, the dangerous trio of ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays are ionising radiation that can actually damage your cells.
Key Point: Remember the phrase "Rabbits Munch In Very Unusual eXpensive Gardens" to recall the order: Radio, Micro, Infrared, Visible, Ultraviolet, X-rays, Gamma!
These waves come from different sources too. Gamma rays emerge from radioactive decay, whilst visible light, ultraviolet, and X-rays are produced when electrons drop down energy levels in atoms. Infrared radiation is created when chemical bonds vibrate - that's why you feel heat from warm objects! When electromagnetic waves hit materials, they can be reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through them.
