Joint Actions and Sporting Movements

Ever wondered how your body creates those smooth, powerful movements in sport? It all comes down to joint actions - the specific ways your bones move at connection points.

Flexion and extension are your most basic movements. Flexion bends a joint (like curling your arm during a biceps curl), whilst extension straightens it (like your elbow when shot putting). These opposing actions work together in almost every sport.

Your ankles get special treatment with plantar flexion (pointing your toes like a ballet dancer) and dorsi flexion (pulling your toes toward your shins when lifting a football). Meanwhile, adduction brings limbs toward your body's centre, and abduction moves them away - think of jumping jacks for a perfect example.

Quick Tip: Remember that flexion = bending, extension = straightening. This simple rule applies to most joints and will save you marks in exams!

The five major joints you need to master are the hip and shoulder (both ball and socket joints), plus the knee, ankle, and elbow (all hinge joints). Each joint type determines which movements are possible - ball and socket joints offer the most freedom, whilst hinge joints work like a door, moving in just two directions.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
