Your skeleton isn't just a Halloween decoration—it's an amazing framework with specific bones designed for different jobs. Long bones like those in your arms and legs are strong and work with muscles to help you move. Short bones are compact and sturdy, perfectly designed to support your body weight.
When you need protection for vital organs, flat bones come to the rescue. They shield important parts like your brain and heart, while their broad surfaces provide places for muscles to attach. Irregular bones have unique shapes suited for protection and muscle attachment in specific areas of your body.
Your skeletal system serves five essential functions. It provides support and shape, giving you the frame that holds everything together and helps maintain good posture (which is particularly important in sports like gymnastics). It offers protection for vital organs—your skull protects your brain, allowing you to head a football without serious injury.
Did you know? The bone marrow inside your bones produces red blood cells that carry oxygen to your muscles. Athletes with more red blood cells can often perform better!
The skeleton also enables movement through the connection of muscles to bones via tendons. When muscles contract, they pull on bones to create movement at joints. Additionally, your bones serve as factories, making red blood cells and platelets in the bone marrow. Finally, bones act as a mineral storage facility, storing calcium and phosphorus that strengthen bones and assist with muscle contraction.
