UCAT Strategy & Verbal Reasoning Tips

Time management is absolutely crucial for UCAT success. You should aim to answer 8 passages accurately rather than rushing through all of them poorly - spend quality time on these and make educated guesses on the rest.

Verbal Reasoning contains more reading comprehension questions than true/false ones (roughly 7 out of 11). For true/false questions, remember that "can't tell" means there's insufficient information in the text - don't use your own knowledge or make assumptions!

The key to reading comprehension is scanning for keywords from the question. Some questions require you to piece together information from different parts of the text. Watch out for qualifiers like "some," "often," "never," or "always" - these small words can completely change whether a statement is true or false.

Top Tip: Strong statements using words like "never" or "all" tend to be false because they require extremely high levels of proof to be correct.

UCAT advice – page 2

Decision Making & Quantitative Reasoning

Decision Making questions cover drawing conclusions, logical puzzles, interpreting information, Venn diagrams, evaluating arguments, and probability. Visualisation is your best friend here - actually draw things out and write notes to help you think clearly.

For syllogisms, never assume the reverse is automatically true. If "all lawyers who graduated from Harvard work in the supreme court," this doesn't mean everyone in the supreme court who graduated from Harvard is a lawyer. Remember that "some" means at least one, but not all.

Quantitative Reasoning doesn't always require full calculations. Sometimes you can make educated guesses or spot patterns. Scan the data quickly first, then identify what specific information the question needs.

Smart Strategy: If a QR question is taking too long, read what it's actually asking for - it might look complex but only want something simple.
