When to Seek Medical Help
Always be cautious with children's health - it's better to seek advice if you're concerned. Call a doctor or NHS 111 when a child shows persistent signs of illness or becomes more unwell.
You should call an ambulance immediately if a child shows emergency symptoms such as breathing difficulties, seizures, significant pain, or unresponsiveness. Other serious signs include a rash that doesn't fade when pressed with a glass, persistent vomiting (over 24 hours), or a high fever that can't be reduced.
Meningitis requires urgent medical attention. Watch for symptoms like high temperature, vomiting, severe headache, stiff neck, and dislike of bright lights. In babies, look for high-pitched crying, floppy body, or swelling of the fontanelle. Don't wait for all symptoms to appear before calling 999.
Remember: With meningitis, a key warning sign is a rash of red/purple 'pin prick' spots that don't fade when pressed with a glass. This requires immediate medical help!
Asthma attacks occur when airways go into spasm, making breathing difficult. These may be triggered by allergies, colds, stress, or cold temperatures. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness. Ensure children with asthma have their blue relief inhaler readily available.
Managing Emergency Conditions
When a child has an asthma attack, proper positioning is essential. Sit them upright and facing forward in a comfortable position – never let them lie down. Reassure them while administering their blue relief inhaler. If it's their first attack or the condition persists, call an ambulance.
Seizures or fitting may be caused by epilepsy or high temperatures. You'll notice violent muscle twitching, clenched fists, and possibly unconsciousness. Don't restrain the child! Instead, clear the area and use pillows for protection. Call an ambulance and if the seizure stops before help arrives, place them in the recovery position.
A child's normal temperature is between 36.5°C and 37.4°C. When they're ill, this can rise, so using a digital thermometer helps monitor their condition. To lower a high temperature, remove warm clothing, offer cool drinks (water or diluted drinks), and ensure they're not overdressed.
Safety tip: Parents or carers may give paracetamol to help reduce temperature, but always follow proper dosing instructions and seek medical help if the fever doesn't respond to treatment.
