Premature Babies and Their Special Needs
Premature babies are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, which means they haven't had enough time to fully develop in the womb. By week 12, a baby is formed, but they continue growing and developing right up until full term.
These tiny fighters face several challenges because their bodies aren't quite ready for life outside the womb. Breathing difficulties are common since their lungs are undeveloped and filled with liquid that hasn't been absorbed yet. Their weak immune systems make them vulnerable to infections, whilst problems with sucking and swallowing make feeding tricky.
You'll notice premature babies often have distinctive physical features - yellowy or red wrinkled skin, sealed eyes, weak muscles with limited movement, and heads that look large compared to their bodies. They also struggle to regulate their body temperature and may have low levels of calcium, iron, and blood sugar.
Treatment approaches vary depending on the baby's specific needs. Healthcare professionals provide the gentlest breathing support possible, as ventilators can sometimes cause lung problems. For infections, babies might receive antibiotics for bacterial issues, antifungal medication, or supportive nutrition depending on the type of infection.
Key Point: Despite needing intensive medical care, it's still vital that parents get opportunities to bond with their premature baby during this critical time.
Feeding Challenges and Solutions
Feeding problems aren't just limited to premature babies - full-term babies can face difficulties too. When healthcare professionals check a newborn's mouth, they're looking for issues like cleft palate, which is a gap in the roof of the mouth that makes feeding extremely difficult and requires surgical repair.
Another common issue is tongue-tie, where the baby's tongue movement is restricted by a piece of skin that's too short and tight, anchoring it to the bottom of the mouth. If a baby has persistent problems latching during breastfeeding, this is one of the first things medical staff will check for.
Premature babies often need special nutritional support to catch up on their growth. They might require vitamin and mineral supplements, special formula milks, or if they're too weak to feed normally, nutrition through tubes - either into a vein via IV or through the nose, throat, or mouth into the stomach.
It's completely normal for parents to experience feeding challenges with any newborn. Don't feel discouraged if things don't go smoothly straight away - information, advice, and support from healthcare professionals can make all the difference.
