Camera Shots and Angles
Camera shots are all about distance and what you want to show your audience. Think of them as your visual toolkit for storytelling.
The extreme close-up (ECU) captures tiny details like an eye or a hand, perfect for showing crucial plot elements. Moving out slightly, a big close-up (BCU) focuses on facial features to reveal intense emotions, whilst a standard close-up (CU) showing head and shoulders works brilliantly for emotional scenes or important dialogue.
Medium shots give you more context. A medium close-up (MCU) from head to chest works well for conversations, whilst a mid-shot (MS) to the waist lets you see what characters are doing with their hands. Long-shots (LS) show the whole person and their movement, and wide-angle shots (WA) reveal entire locations.
Camera angles are your secret weapon for manipulating how viewers feel about characters. A high angle looking down makes subjects appear weak or vulnerable, eye level creates equality and connection, whilst low angles looking up make characters seem powerful or threatening. The tilted canted angle suggests something's not quite right - perfect for showing confusion or adding energy to a scene.

Camera lenses dramatically change how your audience experiences a scene. A fish-eye lens creates that distinctive curved, 180-degree view you've probably seen in music videos - it's deliberately distorted and eye-catching.
Telephoto lenses work like binoculars, magnifying subjects to make them appear much closer than they actually are. Wide-angle lenses do the opposite, squeezing more of the scene into view but making everything seem further apart.
Lighting sets the entire mood of your production. High-key lighting floods everything with even, bright light so you can see all the details clearly. You'll recognise this from romantic comedies, sitcoms, and soap operas where everything feels open and accessible.
Low-key lighting creates pools of light surrounded by deep shadows, hiding parts of the scene to build mystery or tension. Horror films, thrillers, and sci-fi movies love this technique. When filmmakers push this contrast to extremes, it's called dramatic contrast - those stark differences between light and shadow create incredibly powerful visual impact.
