Understanding Logic Gates and Truth Tables in GCSE Computer Science





Boolean Functions and Truth Tables
Truth tables are practical tools that show all possible outputs from combinations of inputs in a Boolean expression. They're incredibly useful for understanding how logical operations work in computers.
When working with Boolean logic, we can represent values as either True/False or as 1/0. For the AND operator, both inputs must be True (or 1) for the output to be True. This is why only the combination of True AND True results in True.
In binary form (using 0 and 1), the AND function only outputs 1 when both inputs are 1. All other combinations result in 0.
💡 Think of the AND operator like a strict teacher - you only get approval (true) when both conditions are satisfied. If either condition fails, the result is always false.

OR and NOT Functions
The OR operator is much more lenient than AND. It outputs True (or 1) if either one or both inputs are True. Only when both inputs are False (0) will the OR function output False.
The NOT operator is the simplest of all - it just reverses whatever input it receives. If you give it True, it outputs False. If you give it False, it outputs True. This is also called an inverter.
When using binary, NOT turns every 0 into 1, and every 1 into 0. It's like flipping a switch to the opposite position.
