Understanding Care Values
Think about how you'd feel if someone else made all your decisions for you - pretty rubbish, right? That's exactly why care values exist in health and social care settings.
These seven essential rules help practitioners treat people with respect whilst keeping their dignity intact. The main goal is using a person-centred approach, which basically means putting the individual at the heart of every decision.
💡 Remember: Care values aren't just nice ideas - they're practical tools that help vulnerable people maintain what matters most to them.
The Seven Care Values
Health and social care workers follow seven key principles: respect for others, preserving dignity, effective communication, empowering and promoting independence, maintaining confidentiality, safeguarding and duty of care, and promoting anti-discriminatory practice.
Each value plays a crucial role in making sure people feel valued and safe. Whether someone's dealing with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, or just the challenges that come with getting older, these values provide a safety net.
The most important thing to understand is that these aren't separate rules - they all work together to create an environment where everyone feels respected and heard.
Empowerment in Action
Empowerment means feeling in control of your own life and having a real say in decisions that affect you. It's about getting the information you need to weigh up your options and make choices that feel right for you.
Some groups need extra support with empowerment - children, people with learning difficulties, those with physical disabilities, and older adults. This doesn't mean making decisions for them; it means helping them make their own informed choices.
When empowerment works well, people can think through the advantages and disadvantages of different treatments or services, then make decisions they feel confident about.
Advocates and Support
Sometimes people need an advocate - someone who helps them express their views when they can't do it themselves. Think of advocates as translators who make sure someone's voice is heard clearly.
An advocate might help someone understand complex medical information, support them in meetings with doctors, or simply make sure their preferences are respected. They don't make decisions for people; they help people make their own decisions.

This apps acc the goat. I find revision so boring but this app makes it so easy to organize it all and then you can ask the freeeee ai to test yourself so good and you can easily upload your own stuff. highly recommend as someone taking mocks now
