Understanding Legal Frameworks
You'll encounter different types of rules throughout your career, and knowing the difference is crucial. Laws are the serious stuff - government-enforced rules with real penalties, whilst codes of conduct are more like industry guidelines that set professional expectations.
The Trades Description Act 1968 is your first line of defence against dodgy business practices. It stops companies from lying about their products or services - basically, if you're selling a "miracle anti-ageing cream," it better actually do what you claim it does.
Remember: This act protects both you as a consumer and your future clients when you're running treatments or selling products.
Workplace Rights and Protections
The Equal Opportunities Act has your back with nine protected characteristics including age, disability, race, and sexual orientation. This means you can't be discriminated against in the workplace, and you can't discriminate against others either.
Working time regulations aren't just suggestions - they're legal limits. You can't be forced to work more than 48 hours per week (unless you opt out), and you're entitled to proper breaks and rest periods.
National minimum wage rates change annually, so stay updated. Currently, if you're 21 or over, you're entitled to ยฃ11.44 per hour minimum, with different rates for younger workers.
