Tempo and Speed Terms
Ever wondered why some music feels slow and dreamy whilst other pieces make you want to dance? It's all about tempo markings that tell musicians exactly how fast or slow to play.
Adagio means super slow (think of a sad ballad), whilst allegro tells you to play quite quickly with energy. Between these extremes, you've got andante for moderately slow pieces and allegretto for moderately fast ones - it's faster than andante but not as zippy as allegro.
When composers want you to change speed during a piece, they use accelerando (gradually faster) or rallentando and ritardando (both mean getting slower). The term a tempo is like hitting the reset button - it means go back to normal speed.
Quick Tip: Remember that most tempo terms come from Italian, so they might sound fancy but they're just describing speed!
Volume and Dynamics
Music without different volumes would be like speaking in a monotone voice all day - pretty boring! Dynamic markings tell you how loud or quiet to play, and they're mostly abbreviated letters.
Start with the basics: f (forte) means loud, p (piano) means quiet. Add another letter and you get extremes - ff (fortissimo) is very loud, whilst pp (pianissimo) is very quiet. The mf (mezzo forte) and mp (mezzo piano) sit in the middle for moderately loud and moderately quiet.
Crescendo makes music gradually louder (think of a wave building up), whilst decrescendo and diminuendo both mean getting quieter. You'll often see these as wedge-shaped symbols too - they're visual cues that make perfect sense once you see them in action.
Remember: Piano doesn't just mean the instrument - it's also the Italian word for quiet!

Staccato dots make notes detached and bouncy, whilst a slur connects different notes to be played smoothly. When you see 8va, it means play one octave higher than written - super useful for avoiding loads of ledger lines.
Time signatures get shortcuts too: C represents common time (4/4), whilst cut time looks similar but means 2/2. Repeat barlines with dots save space by telling you to play sections twice, and multi-bar rests show long periods of silence without cluttering the page.
Practice Tip: These symbols become second nature once you start using them in real music - they're designed to make reading easier, not harder!
