Employment Status and Income Inequality
Unemployment hits households hard, often leaving families with little to no income for basic necessities. The UK saw unemployment jump from 3.7% in 2019 to 4.3% in 2020, largely due to COVID-19's economic impact.
However, there's some good news in the long-term picture. Unemployment has actually been falling over the past decade—dropping from 8% in 2011 to just 4.1% by 2022. This massive improvement means fewer people need to rely on benefits.
Remember: Even small changes in unemployment rates affect millions of real families across the country.
Despite these improvements, employment status remains a major factor in determining who has financial security and who doesn't. Being out of work doesn't just mean less money—it can create a cycle that's difficult to escape.
Zero-Hour Contracts and Financial Uncertainty
Zero-hour contracts create a different kind of employment problem—you're technically employed but never know when you'll actually work. This makes budgeting nearly impossible since your weekly income is completely unpredictable.
The situation gets worse when you consider that one in five zero-hour workers face penalties for not being available at short notice. You're expected to be constantly ready for work, but there's no guarantee you'll actually get any hours.
Think about it: How would you budget for university or plan your future without knowing your weekly income?
Whilst these contracts benefit employers by providing flexible staffing during busy periods, they clearly favour businesses over workers. With rising costs for food and fuel, this uncertainty has become increasingly impractical for employees trying to make ends meet.
Social Class and Life Opportunities
Your social class traditionally determined your wealth and job prospects—higher class meant better opportunities, whilst lower class often meant struggling with low-paid work. Research shows that 66% of people believe social class still affects life chances today.
This happens because wealthier families can afford private schools and pass down inheritance, giving their children significant advantages. Meanwhile, those from lower social classes face barriers that make financial success much harder to achieve.
Good news: Social mobility is improving thanks to more scholarships, funding opportunities, and changing attitudes.
Social mobility has become more achievable as traditional manufacturing jobs declined and educational opportunities expanded. It's now easier for someone from a working-class background to access quality education and climb the social ladder, though challenges certainly remain.
Geography, Housing, and the Property Ladder
Housing inequality creates a postcode lottery where your location determines your wealth prospects. London house prices exemplify this problem—young people wanting to study or work there often can't afford the astronomical housing costs.
Getting onto the property ladder has become increasingly difficult for young people with lower incomes. However, those already owning property are seeing massive gains—housing wealth has risen by £80,000 over just five years.
Reality check: If you can't afford to buy property early, you might miss out on significant wealth-building opportunities.
This creates a two-tier system where property owners get richer whilst renters fall further behind. Geographic inequality means that someone's postcode can determine their financial future, making housing one of the most significant drivers of wealth disparity in modern Britain.
