However, there's some good news in the long-term picture. Unemployment has actually been falling over the past decade—dropping from 8% in 2011 to just 4.1% by 2022. This massive improvement means fewer people need to rely on benefits.

Despite these improvements, employment status remains a major factor in determining who has financial security and who doesn't. Being out of work doesn't just mean less money—it can create a cycle that's difficult to escape.
Zero-hour contracts create a different kind of employment problem—you're technically employed but never know when you'll actually work. This makes budgeting nearly impossible since your weekly income is completely unpredictable.
