Understanding Genre Basics

Genre is essentially a type or category of media text that follows certain patterns and rules. Think of it like a recipe - whilst each film, TV show, or music video might have its own unique ingredients, they follow similar basic instructions that make them recognisable.

Steve Neale's theory explains that genres work through "repetition and difference". This means they keep certain familiar elements (like jump scares in horror films) whilst introducing new twists to keep things fresh. These visual cues instantly tell you what type of experience you're about to have.

Star personas play a massive role in shaping genres too. Think about how Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is almost always cast in action films, or how certain actors become so associated with specific genres that their presence alone signals what type of film it is.

David Buckingham argues that genres constantly evolve to reflect the society they're created in. This is why zombie films in the 1960s were quite different from modern zombie films - they respond to the fears and concerns of their time.
