Context and the Sexual Revolution
The 1960s were absolutely transformative for women's rights in Britain. New divorce laws, abortion rights, and contraception (especially the pill) gave women unprecedented freedom from traditional roles as just wives and mothers.
This sexual revolution created a paradox in media representation. Whilst women gained more independence, they also became increasingly objectified and sexualised in films and advertising. It's like society didn't quite know how to handle women's newfound power.
Feminist movements emerged as women demanded better treatment both in society and media representation. They were fed up with the tired "damsel in distress" trope and wanted to see stronger, more complex female characters on screen.

Analysing Female Representation
The poster shows two fascinating contrasts in how women were portrayed. The woman on the left appears as the classic victim - floppy body, closed eyes, and exposed neck make her seem vulnerable and weak. Her skin-tight dress and bare chest clearly sexualise her for male viewers.
But here's where it gets interesting! The woman on the right breaks all the rules. She's positioned above the kneeling man, showing bared teeth and a raised arm in an aggressive stance. This dominant positioning would've been shocking for 1960s audiences.
Representing women as potential killers and aggressors was revolutionary for this period. It reflected the growing feminist movement and challenged traditional ideas about feminine behaviour and power dynamics.
