Context and the Sexual Revolution
The 1960s were absolutely transformative for women's rights in Britain. New divorce laws, abortion rights, and contraception (especially the pill) gave women unprecedented freedom from traditional roles as just wives and mothers.
This sexual revolution created a paradox in media representation. Whilst women gained more independence, they also became increasingly objectified and sexualised in films and advertising. It's like society didn't quite know how to handle women's newfound power.
Feminist movements emerged as women demanded better treatment both in society and media representation. They were fed up with the tired "damsel in distress" trope and wanted to see stronger, more complex female characters on screen.

Analysing Female Representation
