Getting Started with Maths Basics

You're about to tackle some essential maths skills that'll serve you well throughout your studies. These aren't just random rules - they're the tools that make complex calculations manageable.

Think of these basics as your mathematical toolkit. Once you've got them sorted, you'll approach any maths problem with confidence rather than confusion.

BIDMAS: Your Order of Operations Guide

BIDMAS tells you exactly which calculations to do first when you've got a messy equation. It's like following a recipe - do things in the wrong order and you'll get the wrong answer!

Here's what each letter stands for: Brackets first, then Indices (powers), followed by Division and Multiplication (whichever comes first from left to right), and finally Addition and Subtraction (again, left to right).

For example, in 2 + 3 × 4, you'd do 3 × 4 = 12 first, then 2 + 12 = 14. Without BIDMAS, you might wrongly do 2 + 3 = 5, then 5 × 4 = 20.

Remember: Division and multiplication have equal priority, as do addition and subtraction - just work left to right when they appear together!

Negative Numbers and Standard Form

Negative numbers follow surprisingly simple rules when you're multiplying or dividing. If the two signs are different $like + and -$ , your answer becomes negative. If both signs are the same $both + or both -$ , your answer becomes positive.

So (-3) × (+4) = -12, but (-3) × (-4) = +12. It's like a mathematical version of "opposites attract"!

Standard form is your best mate when dealing with massive or tiny numbers. Instead of writing 0.0000063, you write it as 6.3 × 10⁻⁶. The power tells you how many places to move the decimal point.

Pro Tip: For standard form, negative powers mean tiny numbers, positive powers mean huge numbers!
