Set Theory Basics and Number Types

Sets are simply collections of objects written in curly brackets, like A = {2, 4, 6}. Think of them as mathematical containers that hold specific items called elements.

The mathematical world is built on different types of number sets. Natural numbers are your basic counting numbers (1, 2, 3...), which expand into integers when you add negative numbers. Rational numbers can be written as fractions, whilst irrational numbers like π can't be expressed as simple fractions.

Key notation you'll need includes: x ∈ A (x is in set A), x ∉ A (x is not in set A), and n(A) for counting elements. The empty set (∅) contains nothing, whilst the universal set (ξ) contains everything relevant to your problem.

Quick Tip: Think of the universal set as the "universe" your problem exists in - everything else is just a subset of this main collection.

Set Operations and Examples

Set operations work like logical commands that combine or compare different sets. The intersection (A ∩ B) finds elements that appear in both sets - think "AND". The union (A ∪ B) combines all elements from either set - think "OR".

The complement (A') includes everything not in set A, whilst subsets (A ⊂ B) mean all of A's elements are also in B. These operations follow predictable patterns once you get the hang of them.

Working through examples makes this clearer: if A = {2, 4, 6, 8} and B = {3, 6, 9}, then A ∩ B = {6} (only 6 appears in both). Meanwhile, A ∪ B = {2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9} (all elements from both sets combined).

Memory Trick: Intersection looks like ∩ (a valley where things meet), union looks like ∪ (a container holding everything together).

Venn Diagrams and Visual Representation

Venn diagrams turn abstract set theory into visual puzzles you can actually see and solve. The rectangular boundary represents your universal set, whilst circles inside show different subsets.

Overlapping circles show intersections - the shared area contains elements in both sets. The entire area covered by circles shows unions. Areas outside specific circles but inside the rectangle represent complements.

Reading Venn diagrams becomes straightforward with practice. You can quickly identify relationships like whether one set is a subset of another, or find complex operations like (A ∩ B)' by looking at the visual patterns.
