Comprehensive GCSE Probability Explained

Probability Concepts
Understanding different types of probability events will make your calculations much more accurate. Relative frequency comes from actual experiments rather than theoretical predictions - it's what really happens when you test something.
Exhaustive events cover everything that could possibly happen (like all faces of a dice), whilst mutually exclusive events cannot occur simultaneously (you can't roll both a 1 and a 6 on the same throw). These distinctions are crucial for setting up your probability calculations correctly.
Dependent events change the game completely because previous outcomes affect future probabilities. When drawing balls without replacement, your second draw depends on what happened first. For example, if you start with 3 red and 6 blue balls, after drawing one red ball, your probabilities shift to 2 red and 6 blue remaining.
The expectation formula (number of trials × probability) helps you predict outcomes over multiple attempts, making it invaluable for real-world applications.
Remember: Dependent events always involve "without replacement" - this changes your denominator for subsequent draws!

The key symbols you need to know are straightforward. A' means "everything not in A" (like students who didn't pass theory), whilst A ∩ B represents the intersection - everything that's in both A and B (students who passed both exams). A ∪ B covers the union, meaning everything in A or B or both.
Here's how they work in practice: if 62% passed theory and 83% passed practical, with everyone passing at least one exam, you can find the overlap. The intersection shows 45% passed both exams, whilst 17% passed only theory and 38% passed only practical.
Quick Tip: Always start by identifying what each circle represents, then work out the overlapping sections step by step.
