This GCSE maths practice paper covers all the essential Foundation-level... Show more

This Edexcel Paper 1F practice paper focuses on the most frequently tested topics from previous years. It's specifically designed for non-calculator questions that become much easier with a calculator, making them perfect for testing your mental maths skills.
The paper covers essential GCSE Foundation maths concepts that you're likely to encounter in your actual exam. However, remember that whilst these topics commonly appear, there's no guarantee they'll all be on your specific paper.
Pro tip: Use this as part of your revision toolkit, but make sure you're still covering all syllabus topics for complete exam preparation.

These opening questions test your fundamental number knowledge - the building blocks that everything else relies on. You'll need to identify place values (like recognising that 3 represents 30 in the number 1439), convert between decimals and percentages, and round to one decimal place.
Powers and units conversion also feature heavily here. You should know that 10³ equals 1000 and be able to convert between metres and centimetres instantly. These might seem simple, but they're often where students lose easy marks through careless mistakes.
Remember: Double-check your basic conversions - 1 metre = 100 centimetres, and 0.3 as a percentage is 30%.

Algebraic simplification starts with recognising that c × c × c × c becomes c⁴, and combining like terms such as 3m + 2m + 5 = 5m + 5. These skills form the foundation for more complex algebra later.
Percentage calculations without a calculator require you to find simple percentages like 20% of £60 (which equals £12). Think of 20% as one-fifth, making the calculation much easier.
You'll also need to identify factors and work with fractions of time. For instance, 1/5 of an hour equals 12 minutes since there are 60 minutes in an hour.
Quick method: For 20%, divide by 5. For 10%, divide by 10. For 5%, find 10% then halve it.

Triangle angle calculations rely on the fact that angles in a triangle always add up to 180°. With angles of 60° and 50° given, the missing angle x must be 70°. Always state your reasoning clearly - "angles in a triangle sum to 180°" is the explanation examiners want to see.
Probability scales help visualise how likely events are. The probability of rolling a 5 on a standard dice is 1/6, which sits between 0 and 1/2 on the probability scale.
Memory trick: Angles in triangles = 180°, angles on a straight line = 180°, angles around a point = 360°.

Proportion problems like finding the cost of 300g of cheese when 1kg costs £6.00 require you to set up ratios. Since 300g is 3/10 of 1kg, the answer is £1.80.
BIDMAS/BODMAS determines the order of calculations. In 20 - 6 × 2, you multiply first (6 × 2 = 12), then subtract (20 - 12 = 8). This rule prevents common calculation errors.
Substitution with negative numbers means being extra careful with signs. When y = -5, then 2y² = 2 × (-5)² = 2 × 25 = 50.
BIDMAS reminder: Brackets, Indices, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction - always in this order!

This multi-part question tests your ability to work with real-world data about fruit masses. You'll subtract to find differences , multiply for totals , and divide to compare values.
The comparison question asks how many times greater one mass is than another. To find how many times greater 155g is than 5g, you divide: 155 ÷ 5 = 31 times greater.
Strategy: Read each part carefully and check your arithmetic twice - these questions often build on each other.

Bar chart interpretation requires you to read values carefully and add them up. Count the frequency for each number of pets, then sum to find the total number of students surveyed.
The mode is the most frequently occurring value - look for the tallest bar on the chart. When additional data is added, consider whether it changes which value appears most often.
Understanding how new data affects statistical measures shows deeper mathematical thinking that examiners value highly.
Top tip: Always double-check your bar chart readings and consider what happens to averages when you add new data points.

This question tests whether correlation implies causation - a key statistical concept. Calculate the proportion of students who passed in each group to see if Cedric's claim holds true.
For the probability calculation, you need the number of students who don't wear glasses AND didn't pass, divided by the total number of students. This tests your understanding of compound probability.
Critical thinking: Just because two things happen together doesn't mean one causes the other - this is important in real life too!

Equation solving requires inverse operations. For 12 + 5x = 2, subtract 12 from both sides, then divide by 5 to get x = -2. Factorising means finding common factors: 20 - 15b = 5.
Ratio to percentage conversion is crucial. If adults to children is 3:2, there are 5 parts total, so children represent 2/5 = 40%. Converting fractions to ratios works the opposite way.
Method: Always identify what the whole represents when working with ratios and percentages.
