Ever wondered what a real GCSE Maths Foundation paper looks... Show more

This Foundation Tier non-calculator paper is worth 80 marks total and you get 90 minutes to complete it. You'll need basic equipment: ruler, protractor, compasses, and an HB pencil - but definitely no calculator allowed!
The key thing to remember is that you must show all your working for every question. Even if you get the wrong answer, you can still pick up marks for using the correct method.
The marks for each question are shown in brackets, which gives you a brilliant hint about how much time to spend on each one. A 1-mark question should take much less time than a 4-mark problem!
Top Tip: Read each question twice before starting - it's easy to miss important details when you're nervous, and checking your answers at the end can save you valuable marks.

These opening questions test your foundation number skills - the building blocks you absolutely need to master. Converting percentages to decimals (38% = 0.38) and identifying fractions from diagrams are classic starters that build your confidence.
You'll also need to compare decimal numbers to find the smallest value from a list. Remember, when comparing decimals like 1.6, 1.4, 2.1, 0.5, and 1.3, look at the whole number part first, then the decimal part.
Adding negative numbers appears here too (-9 + 5). Think of this as starting at -9 on a number line and moving 5 places to the right, landing at -4.
Quick Check: These first four questions should take you about 4-5 minutes total - they're designed to get you warmed up and feeling confident.

Simple algebra equations like p - 2 = 3 are solved by doing the opposite operation to both sides. Since we're subtracting 2, we add 2 to both sides: p = 3 + 2 = 5.
The circle diagram question tests whether you know the difference between radius and diameter. The radius goes from the centre to the edge, whilst the diameter goes all the way across through the centre - so it's twice as long as the radius.
These questions check that you understand basic mathematical vocabulary and can spot when labels are used incorrectly on geometric diagrams.
Memory Trick: Remember that diameter contains the word "meter" - it measures the full distance across the circle, whilst radius is just half that distance.

Factors of 20 are numbers that divide into 20 exactly. Think systematically: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20 all work. You only need to write down three different ones for the marks.
The angle question combines practical measurement with angle classification. You'll need to measure angle x using a protractor, then explain why 50° isn't an obtuse angle.
Obtuse angles are between 90° and 180°, so 50° is actually an acute angle (less than 90°). This is a common mistake that examiners love to test!
Angle Memory: Acute angles are "a-cute" small angle (less than 90°), obtuse angles are "obviously big" (90° to 180°), and reflex angles are over 180°.

Reading coordinates means finding the x-value first, then the y-value - always in that order. Point B's coordinates are read as (x, y) from the graph.
Plotting points like C at (4, -2) requires moving 4 units right from the origin, then 2 units down (because it's negative). Mark it clearly and label it C.
The midpoint between two points is found by averaging the x-coordinates and averaging the y-coordinates separately. Drawing horizontal lines like y = -4 means every point on that line has a y-coordinate of -4.
Coordinate Rule: Remember "along the corridor, up the stairs" - x comes first (horizontal), then y (vertical). Negative numbers mean go left or down.

This special offer question tests your ability to handle real-world maths. Max gets one small plate for half price when he buys each large plate, so he pays £2 + 40p = £2.40 per pair.
For 6 large plates and 6 small plates, he needs 6 pairs costing £2.40 each. That's 6 × £2.40 = £14.40 total.
Since Max has £15 and only needs £14.40, yes, he has enough money! Always show your working step-by-step for these multi-part problems.
Real-World Tip: Break complex problems into smaller steps. Calculate the cost of one "deal", then multiply by how many deals he needs.

Subtraction problems like 700 - 452 test basic arithmetic. Work carefully: 700 - 452 = 248 tickets weren't sold.
Estimation is about rounding numbers to make calculations easier. Round £9.50 to £10 and £19.50 to £20, then multiply: 297 × £10 + 399 × £20. This gives you a quick approximate answer.
Since you rounded both prices upwards, your estimate will be an overestimate - it's higher than the actual total. Always explain whether your estimate is too high or too low.
Estimation Strategy: Round to the nearest £10 or whole numbers to make mental maths easier, but remember to say whether you've rounded up or down.

Calculating the mean involves adding all numbers together and dividing by how many numbers you have. For the six numbers given: (13 + 5 + 4 + 9 + 3 + 8) ÷ 6.
Simplifying algebraic expressions has three parts here. 15a ÷ 3 = 5a, collecting like terms means grouping b's together and c's together, and factorising means taking out common factors.
When collecting like terms in 19 + 5b + 4c - 7b + c, group the numbers (19), the b terms , and the c terms .
Algebra Tip: Always collect like terms by grouping similar letters together. Numbers with the same letter can be added or subtracted, but different letters stay separate.

If 73% of tickets were adult tickets, then 27% were not adult tickets . This type of complementary percentage appears frequently in exams.
Ratios like 2:5 for adults to children mean that out of every 7 people (2 + 5), 2 are adults. So adults make up 2/7 of the total.
For the cinema comparison, calculate actual numbers: 70% of 500 = 350 children on Friday, and 5/8 of 720 = 450 children on Saturday. Kasim is wrong - more children went on Saturday.
Ratio Reality Check: Always convert ratios and percentages to actual numbers when comparing different situations - it makes the answer much clearer.
