Think of decimal points as a bridge between whole numbers and the bits that aren't quite whole yet. Just like with regular numbers, decimals can be positive (like 2.6) or negative .
Here's something brilliant decimals, fractions, and percentages are just different ways of writing the same thing. The number 1.5 is exactly the same as 1½ or 150% - they're like three different languages saying the same word.
Place value works the same way for decimals as it does for whole numbers, just continuing past the decimal point. In 2.78, the 2 means 2 units, the 7 means 7 tenths, and the 8 means 8 hundredths.
Remember Each position after the decimal point gets ten times smaller - tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.
Ordering decimals is like comparing heights in a queue - you start from the left and work your way across until you find a difference. Always begin with the column furthest left and compare digit by digit.
Let's say you're comparing 2.5 and 2.15. Both have 2 in the units column, so move to the tenths. Here, 2.5 has 5 tenths whilst 2.15 has just 1 tenth, making 2.5 the larger number.
The secret trick is adding zeros to make all decimals the same length. Turn 2.5 into 2.50, and suddenly it's obvious that 2.50 is bigger than 2.15 - just like 250 is bigger than 215.
Top tip Adding zeros to the end of a decimal doesn't change its value, but it makes comparison much easier!
Here's how to tackle ordering these decimals from smallest to largest 3.72, 3.07, 3.7, 4.3, 3.764. First, make them all the same length by adding zeros 3.720, 3.070, 3.700, 4.300, 3.764.
Start comparing from the left. All begin with 3 except 4.3, so 4.3 goes last. Now compare the tenths column 3.070 has 0 tenths (smallest), whilst the others have 7, 3, or 7 tenths respectively.
For the three numbers with 7 tenths (3.720, 3.700, 3.764), check the hundredths column. The number 3.700 has 0 hundredths, 3.720 has 2, and 3.764 has 6.
Final answer 3.07, 3.7, 3.72, 3.764, 4.3 - from smallest to largest!
