Getting Started with the Paper

This is a proper GCSE-style paper that tests your multiplication and division skills across different difficulty levels. You'll need to show all your working out clearly - that's how you pick up marks even if your final answer isn't quite right.

Each question is worth 2 marks, so don't spend ages on any single problem. The key is working methodically and checking your calculations as you go.

Top Tip: Use the mark allocation as your time guide - 2 marks usually means about 2-3 minutes per question.

Basic Whole Number Operations

The first three questions ease you in with straightforward whole number calculations. You'll tackle 254ร—7254 \times 7, 258รท6258 \div 6, and 1168รท81168 \div 8 - all designed to test your core arithmetic skills.

For multiplication like 254ร—7254 \times 7, use the column method or break it down: (250ร—7)+(4ร—7)(250 \times 7) + (4 \times 7). Both approaches work perfectly.

The division questions require long division skills. Remember to show each step clearly - your working is just as important as the final answer.

Remember: If division doesn't work out exactly, you might need to express your answer as a decimal or mixed number.

Building Up the Difficulty

Questions 4-6 continue with whole number operations but with slightly trickier numbers. You'll work through 672ร—4672 \times 4, 813ร—5813 \times 5, and 582รท6582 \div 6.

These problems test whether you can handle multiplication and division confidently without a calculator. The numbers are chosen to check your understanding of place value and carrying/borrowing.

For 813ร—5813 \times 5, remember that multiplying by 5 has a neat trick - multiply by 10 then halve the result. This can be quicker than traditional methods.

Quick Check: Always estimate your answers first - 800ร—5800 \times 5 should give you roughly 4000, so your exact answer should be close to this.

Moving to More Complex Calculations

Now things get more interesting with two-digit multiplication and decimal operations. Question 7 asks for 58ร—4658 \times 46 - this needs the grid method or standard algorithm.

The decimal questions $33.84 \div 9$ and $74.25 \times 3$ test your understanding of decimal place value. When multiplying decimals, count the decimal places in your question to position the decimal point correctly in your answer.

For division with decimals, work systematically and keep track of where your decimal point should go.

Key Skill: Converting between decimals and fractions can sometimes make these calculations easier.

Mastering Decimal Operations

Questions 10-12 focus entirely on decimal arithmetic, including some tricky division by decimals. The calculation 71.2รท0.471.2 \div 0.4 might look scary, but there's a simple trick.

When dividing by a decimal, multiply both numbers by 10 until you're dividing by a whole number. So 71.2รท0.471.2 \div 0.4 becomes 712รท4712 \div 4.

13.9ร—713.9 \times 7 and 18.6รท0.818.6 \div 0.8 follow similar patterns - use place value understanding and systematic working to stay accurate.

Pro Tip: Always check if your decimal point is in a sensible position by estimating the size of your answer.

Advanced Decimal Challenges

The final questions push your decimal multiplication and division skills to GCSE standard. Problems like 37.1ร—9.337.1 \times 9.3 require careful organisation to avoid mistakes.

For multiplying two decimals, use the grid method or column multiplication, then position your decimal point by counting decimal places. 37.137.1 has one decimal place, 9.39.3 has one, so your answer needs two.

The division 29.1รท429.1 \div 4 and multiplication 9.06ร—7.99.06 \times 7.9 test whether you can handle these operations confidently under exam conditions.

Final Reminder: Double-check your decimal point placement - it's the most common error in these types of questions.
