Number Topics & Data and Probability
Number work forms the foundation of your maths exam, so nail these basics first. You'll need to master percentage calculations (increases, decreases, and reverse percentages), ratio and proportion problems, and fractions, decimals, and percentages conversions. These pop up everywhere in maths, so getting confident here will boost your marks across the board.
Money problems are guaranteed exam favourites - think best buys, currency conversion, and simple and compound interest. Practice these with real-world examples like comparing shop prices or calculating savings accounts. Don't forget standard form and index laws, which often catch students out but follow straightforward rules once you get the hang of them.
For data and probability, focus on calculating averages and range from frequency tables - this is exam gold. Scatter graphs, pie charts, and probability questions are also common, so practice reading and interpreting these visual displays.
Top tip: Use the RAG (Red, Amber, Green) system to track which topics you're confident with - focus your revision time on red and amber areas first.
Algebra & Shape and Geometry
Algebra might seem scary, but it's just following logical steps. Master expanding and factorising brackets - these skills unlock so many other topics. Solving equations and changing the subject of formulae are absolute must-knows, appearing in almost every exam paper.
Coordinate geometry is your friend for easy marks. Learn how to find the gradient and y-intercept of lines, plot coordinates accurately, and work out midpoints. These visual topics often feel more manageable than pure algebra, so use them to build confidence.
Shape and geometry covers loads of ground, but focus on the big hitters first. Pythagoras' theorem, area and volume calculations, and angle properties in parallel lines and polygons are exam staples. Circle work (circumference and area) plus transformations round out the essential skills.
Speed, distance, time problems and surface area calculations might seem tricky, but they follow clear formulas. Practice substituting values correctly, and always check your units match what the question asks for.
Remember: Geometry questions often give you diagrams to work with - use them! Mark on angles, label sides, and draw extra lines if they help you see the solution.
