Finding the nth Term
The nth term formula helps you calculate any position in a linear sequence. When faced with a sequence like 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, you'll need to follow some simple steps to find the pattern.
First, find the common difference - the number added each time. In our example, it's +4 between each term. This value goes in front of 'n' in our formula. Next, work out what needs to be added to make the formula match the first term. For the sequence 1, 5, 9..., the formula becomes 4n+1, since 4(1)+1=5.
To find specific terms, just substitute the position number. For example, the 50th term would be 4×50+1=201. You can check your formula by testing it on the first few terms to ensure it works.
Quick tip: Always imagine there's a "term zero" before the first term. This helps you understand what constant to add after your "n" term.
Practice with sequences like 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 or 4, 9, 14, 19, 24 . With a bit of practice, you'll be able to quickly spot patterns and derive formulas for any sequence!
