Understanding Populations and Samples
Think about trying to find out what every teenager in the UK thinks about social media - you'd never manage to ask all of them! That's where sampling comes in, which means studying a smaller group to understand the bigger picture.
The population is everyone you're interested in studying (like all UK teenagers), whilst a census would mean surveying every single person in that group. A sample is the smaller group you actually study to make conclusions about the whole population.
Sampling units are the individual people or items in your population, and the sampling frame is basically your contact list - everyone's name or number written down so you can pick who to study.
Quick tip: Censuses are super accurate but ridiculously expensive and time-consuming, which is why most research uses samples instead.
Quota sampling lets researchers handpick how many people from different groups they want (like choosing 50 boys and 50 girls), whilst opportunity sampling just uses whoever's available and willing to participate - think stopping people in the street for a quick survey.

Random Sampling Methods That Actually Work
Simple random sampling is like pulling names from a hat - everyone has exactly the same chance of being chosen, making it totally fair and unbiased.
Systematic sampling picks people at regular intervals, like choosing every 5th person from a list. If you need 18 people from a group of 90, you'd divide 90 by 18 to get 5, then randomly pick your starting point to avoid bias.
Stratified sampling is the most sophisticated method - you split your population into groups (called strata) and sample from each group proportionally. The formula is: (group size ÷ population size) × sample size.
Real example: From a population of 90 people wanting a sample of 18, if you have 35 people aged 1-35, you'd calculate: (35 ÷ 90) × 18 = 7 people from that age group.
Once you know how many people you need from each group, you randomly select them to keep things fair. This method gives you the most representative results because it ensures all different types of people are included.
