Converting Measurements - The Basics
Ever wondered why your PE teacher talks about metres but your ruler shows centimetres? Understanding metric conversions helps you make sense of measurements in everyday life, from cooking recipes to sports distances.
The key to converting centimetres to metres is remembering the magic number: 100. Since there are 100 centimetres in one metre, you simply divide by 100. For example, 400cm ÷ 100 = 4m.
Going the other way is just as simple! When converting metres to centimetres, you multiply by 100 instead. Think of it like this: you're breaking one big unit into lots of smaller pieces, so the number gets bigger.
Quick Tip: Always check if your answer makes sense - metres should give you a smaller number than centimetres for the same length!
Different Metric Units - Your Conversion Toolkit
Converting between metric units becomes dead easy once you know the multiplication rules. Each conversion has its own special number that you'll use every time.
For length measurements, centimetres to millimetres means multiplying by 10. So 400cm becomes 4000mm - much bigger numbers for much smaller units! Weight conversions work similarly: kilograms to grams requires multiplying by 1000, turning 400kg into a whopping 400,000g.
Volume measurements follow the same pattern. Converting litres to millilitres means multiplying by 1000, so 400 litres becomes 400,000ml. Notice how the pattern stays consistent - smaller units always mean bigger numbers!
Memory Trick: Remember "Small units = Big numbers" - when you convert to smaller units like mm or ml, your numbers get much larger!
