Understanding Circles: GCSE Maths Notes

Circle Basics and Key Formulae
Every circle has eight important parts you need to recognise. The radius goes from the centre to the edge, whilst the diameter cuts straight across through the centre (and equals 2 × radius). A chord is any straight line connecting two points on the circle, and a tangent touches the circle at exactly one point.
The circumference is the distance around the outside, like measuring a bike tyre. A sector looks like a pizza slice, an arc is just the curved edge of that slice, and a segment is the leftover bit when you draw a chord across a sector.
There are five essential formulae for circles: circumference (πd or 2πr), area of a circle (πr²), area of a sector , arc length , and perimeter of a sector . Remember that θ (theta) represents the angle at the centre in degrees.
Quick Tip: πr² sounds like "area" - use this to remember it's the area formula! For circumference, just remember πd.

Solving Circle Problems Step-by-Step
The key to circle calculations is following a simple five-step method. First, identify which formula you need from the five main ones. Then spot the key information given in the question - usually the radius, diameter, or angle.
Next, substitute your values into the chosen formula carefully. Rearrange if you need to solve for a different variable (like finding radius when you know circumference). Finally, calculate using your calculator or leave your answer in terms of π if asked.
For sector problems, you'll often need the angle θ and radius to find area, arc length, or perimeter. Remember that sector perimeter includes both the arc length AND the two radii. When working backwards from arc length to find the angle, rearrange the arc length formula to solve for θ.
Exam Tip: Always check if your answer needs to be in terms of π or as a decimal - exams often specify which format they want!
