Understanding Venn Diagrams and Set Notation
Ever wondered how to organise information when groups overlap? Venn diagrams use circles to show relationships between different sets, making it dead simple to see what belongs where.
The universal set (U) contains absolutely everything you're working with - think of it as the big box that holds all possible items. When you see A ∪ B (A union B), this means everything that's in set A, set B, or both combined.
A ∩ B (A intersection B) shows you only the items that appear in both sets - the overlapping bit in the middle. This is super useful when you need to find common elements between two groups.
The complement A' represents everything in the universal set that's NOT in set A. It's like the leftover bits after you've taken out all of set A.
Quick Tip: Remember that ∪ means "or" (union) and ∩ means "and" (intersection) - this will help you remember which symbol does what!
