El Romanticisme i la seva arribada a Catalunya
Imagina't un moviment artístic que va canviar completament la manera d'entendre l'art i que encara influeix en la cultura actual. El romanticisme va néixer a Anglaterra a finals del segle XVIII i es va escampar per Europa durant les primeres dècades del XIX.
Els artistes romàntics van trencar amb la tradició clàssica, apostant per l'individualisme i el subjectivisme. Desconfiaven de la raó i preferien deixar-se portar pel somni, la intuïció i fins i tot la follia. D'aquí sorgeix la figura de l'heroi romàntic: un personatge en constant lluita contra la societat.
Aquest conflicte amb la realitat els portava a refugiar-se en escenaris solitaris i a evadir-se en el temps i l'espai. Per això mitificaven l'època medieval i el món cavalleresc, i sentien fascinació per l'exotisme dels països mediterranis i orientals.
Recorda: El romanticisme va introduir conceptes estètics nous com la lletjor i el grotesc, trencant les fronteres entre arts i gèneres.
A Catalunya, les primeres idees romàntiques van arribar a través de la revista El Europeo, però l'absolutisme de Ferran VII va frenar el moviment fins a 1833. Amb la mort del rei i el retorn dels exiliats, el romanticisme català va reprendre força amb caràcter liberal i idees progressistes.
La Renaixença: recuperar la identitat catalana
Després de segles de decadència , la llengua catalana necessitava una revitalització urgent. El català havia desaparegut de la literatura i mancaven normes de morfosintaxi i ortografia. L'estat espanyol havia contribuït a crear una diglòssia problemàtica.
La Renaixença (1833-1842) va sorgir com un moviment renaixentista que incorporava models estètics romàntics i, més tard, realistes. La burgesia i el proletariat van desenvolupar un fort sentiment de nacionalisme i identitat de país.
Es van crear editorials i publicacions literàries en català, buscant un model de llengua literària i recuperant el passat gloriós. Els objectius eren clars: recuperar l'ús del català en temes importants, recopilar la tradició popular (folklore, rondalles i contes) i crear una poesia amb característiques pròpies.
Dato curiós: Els Jocs Florals, amb el lema "pàtria, fe i amor", van ser fonamentals per impulsar la literatura catalana.
Els Jocs Florals van ser convocats el primer diumenge de maig del 1859. Donaven tres premis principals: la flor natural (millor poema amorós), l'englantina d'or (poema patriòtic) i la viola d'or i argent (poema religiós). Aquest certamen va donar a conèixer figures com Jacint Verdaguer, Àngel Guimerà i Narcís Oller.
Àngel Guimerà: el dramaturg llegendari
Àngel Guimerà és una de les figures més importants del teatre català. Nascut a Santa Cruz de Tenerife el 1845 (fill de pare català i mare canària), va marxar al Vendrell amb 8 anys i es va traslladar a Barcelona amb 14.
La seva vida personal va marcar profundament la seva obra literària. Es va enamorar de Maria Rubió, un amor impossible que va influir en la seva visió tràgica de l'amor. Va participar en el Primer Congrés Catalanista (1880) i va ser impulsor de la revista La Renaixença.
Les temàtiques recurrents en l'obra de Guimerà reflecteixen la seva biografia: idealització de la figura materna, mitificació de la infantesa, personatges d'origen incert (com Marta de Terra Baixa) i una visió dual del món que separa clarament el bé del mal.
Frase històrica: Guimerà va inaugurar els Jocs Florals del 1894 amb la famosa frase "Catalunya no ha mort".
L'obra de Guimerà es divideix en tres etapes: la tragèdia romàntica (1879-1890) amb obres com Mar i Cel; el marc realista (1890-1900) amb Terra Baixa i Maria Rosa; i les noves temptatives (1900-1924) amb influència modernista i obres com El camí del sol.
Terra Baixa: el clàssic universal
Terra Baixa és l'obra més popular i traduïda de Guimerà, convertida en un autèntic clàssic de la literatura catalana. Traduïda a catorze idiomes diferents, aquesta obra teatral reflecteix l'etapa de plantejament social de l'escriptor.
L'obra presenta una dualitat espacial molt clara i simbòlica. La Terra Alta, situada als Pirineus, representa un espai atòpic sense pecat ni corrupció, un lloc pur i innocent.
En contrast, la Terra Baixa simbolitza el mal món, ple de malícia, pecat i corrupció, on succeeixen els fets dramàtics de l'obra. Aquesta oposició reflecteix la visió dual del món característica de Guimerà.
Per què és important: Terra Baixa és una de les obres teatrals catalanes més representades internacionalment i mostra la capacitat de la literatura catalana per arribar a audiències universals.
