L'estudi dels sons de la llengua
Imagina't que pots descomposar cada paraula que pronuncies com si fossis un científic del llenguatge. És exactament això el que fan la fonètica i la fonologia.
La fonètica articulatòria s'encarrega d'estudiar com produïm els sons utilitzant els nostres òrgans (es representa entre claudàtors []). La fonètica acústica analitza les ones sonores amb paràmetres físics, mentre que la fonètica auditiva se centra en com percebem aquests sons. Per altra banda, la fonologia estudia els fonemes, que són les representacions mentals dels sons que compartim tots els parlants .
Recorda: Un so pot tenir diverses grafies i una grafia pot representar diversos sons. Per això existeix la transcripció fonètica amb l'alfabet fonètic internacional (AFI).
Per produir sons necessites tres grups d'òrgans: els de respiració (pulmons, bronquis, tràquea), els de fonació (glotis, cordes vocals, laringe) i els d'articulació (faringe, cavitats nasal i bucal). Segons com funcionin, obtindràs sons sonors o sords, orals o nasals, i vocàlics o consonàntics.
Les vocals i el sistema vocàlic
Les vocals són sons que es produeixen sense cap obstacle al pas de l'aire - són sempre sonors i generalment orals. Es classifiquen segons dos criteris súper pràctics que has de dominar.
Primer, el grau d'elevació de la llengua: vocals altes (llengua més elevada) i vocals baixes (llengua menys elevada). Segon, el grau d'avançament: vocals anteriors (llengua cap endavant), centrals (al centre) i posteriors (cap enrere).
El català té un sistema vocàlic fascinant amb dos subsistemes. El subsistema tònic és per a síl·labes amb accent, mentre que l'àton és per a les que no en tenen. La reducció vocàlica fa que algunes vocals que es distingeixen en síl·laba tònica desapareguin en àtona.

Els dialectes catalans tenen petites diferències: l'occidental, central, alguerès i rossellonès tenen set vocals tòniques, mentre que l'oriental i balear en tenen vuit amb l'addició de .
Fenòmens de contacte vocàlic i hiat
Quan les vocals s'ajunten passen coses increïbles que has de conèixer per dominar la pronunciació catalana. Aquests fenòmens de contacte poden ocórrer dins d'una paraula o entre paraules contigües.
Dins d'un mot trobes diftongs creixents, diftongs decreixents i triftongs. Entre paraules contigües hi ha tres fenòmens clau: la sinalefa , l'elisió (supressió de vocals àtones [a] i [e] quan contacten amb una vocal diferent) i la fusió (reducció de dues vocals idèntiques a una sola).
Truc per recordar: Pensa en la sinalefa com una "fusió" de paraules que sonen més fluides juntes.
El hiat és l'excepció: dues vocals contigües que mantenen la seva independència i actuen com a nucli de síl·labes diferents. Tot i estar en contacte, no es modifiquen, no s'elideixen ni es fonen - simplement coexisteixen mantenint les seves característiques originals.
