Ever wonder why your back hurts after a long study... Show more

Think about your typical day - how much time do you actually spend sitting or lying down? Sedentary behaviour is any activity you do whilst sitting or reclining that uses very little energy (≤1.5 METs). This includes studying, gaming, scrolling through social media, or watching TV.
Here's what gets confusing: sedentary behaviour isn't the same as physical inactivity. Physical inactivity means not hitting the recommended 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity daily. You could be someone who goes for a run every day but still spends 10+ hours sitting - that makes you an "active couch potato."
METs (Metabolic Equivalents) measure how much energy different activities use. One MET equals the energy you use sitting quietly. Light activities like slow walking use 1.6-2.9 METs, whilst vigorous exercise like running burns 6+ METs.
Quick Check: Count how many hours you spent sitting yesterday - you might be surprised by the total!

Your body wasn't designed for marathon sitting sessions, and it shows. Obesity and weight gain top the list because sitting burns hardly any calories. When energy intake from food exceeds what you're burning, your body stores the excess as fat.
Type 2 diabetes risk increases because long periods of inactivity mess with how your body responds to insulin, the hormone controlling blood sugar. Your muscles basically forget how to use glucose efficiently when they're not being used.
Cardiovascular disease becomes more likely due to high blood pressure, poor cholesterol levels, and circulation problems. Meanwhile, musculoskeletal issues develop from poor posture (hello, "tech neck"), weak glute muscles, and reduced bone density from lack of weight-bearing activity.
Research even links excessive sitting to increased cancer risk, particularly colon and breast cancers, though scientists are still working out exactly why this happens.

Your mental health takes a hit too when you're glued to screens for hours. Studies consistently show links between high screen time and increased rates of anxiety and depression. This might happen because sedentary activities replace more beneficial ones like exercise or face-to-face socialising.
Self-esteem often drops, partly due to body image issues from weight gain and partly from constant social media comparisons. When screen time replaces real-world interactions, social isolation creeps in, leaving you feeling disconnected from mates and family.
Sleep quality suffers massively, especially when you're on devices before bed. Blue light from screens interferes with melatonin, the hormone that makes you sleepy. Ever notice how hard it is to fall asleep after scrolling through TikTok?
Reality Check: If you're feeling more anxious or down lately, consider how much time you're spending sitting with screens versus moving and socialising.

Let's break down a typical 5th year student's day. Between breakfast (20 mins), transport (1 hour total), classes , homework (2 hours), meals (50 mins), and evening screen time (2 hours), you're looking at roughly 11 hours of sitting daily. That's mental when you think about it.
Here's the key difference between sedentary and inactive behaviour: Person A might sit for 10 hours but go for an hour run daily (active but sedentary), whilst Person B might work on their feet all day but never do structured exercise (inactive but not sedentary). Both face different health risks.
The biggest mistake? Thinking that one hour of exercise cancels out 15 hours of sitting. It doesn't work that way - your body needs regular movement throughout the day, not just one intense session.
Breaking up sitting time is absolutely crucial. Even standing and stretching for 1-2 minutes every 30 minutes makes a real difference to your health.

You don't need to completely overhaul your life - small changes add up. During lunch, take a quick walk instead of sitting in the canteen scrolling your phone. If teachers allow it, stand at the back of class for a few minutes during long lessons.
Try the Pomodoro technique when studying: 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute standing or walking break. Stand whilst taking phone calls, suggest active meetups with friends instead of just hanging around, and walk or cycle to school when possible.
The World Health Organisation has specific guidelines about limiting sedentary time because it's just as important as getting enough exercise. Their research shows that breaking up long sitting periods regularly is more beneficial than one big exercise session.
Remember, every movement counts. Even fidgeting, stretching at your desk, or taking the stairs instead of lifts helps reduce your overall sedentary time.
Action Plan: Set a phone reminder to stand and move for 2 minutes every 30 minutes during study sessions - your body will thank you!

Sedentary behaviour = waking activity using ≤1.5 METs whilst sitting or lying down. Physical inactivity = not meeting 60 minutes daily moderate-vigorous activity guidelines. These are completely different concepts - you can be active but still dangerously sedentary.
Major physical risks include obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, poor posture, and weak muscles/bones. Mental health risks cover anxiety, depression, poor sleep, and social isolation from excessive screen time.
Key strategy: Reduce overall sitting time, but most importantly, break up long periods every 30 minutes. Think "move more, sit less" rather than just "exercise more." Small, frequent movements throughout your day are just as crucial as that one PE class or training session.
Your generation faces unique challenges with technology and sedentary lifestyles, but understanding these risks puts you ahead of the game in protecting your health.
