The Road to War

Ever wondered how one person's death could trigger a world war? European countries had spent years creating alliances - basically friendship agreements where they promised to help each other if attacked. This seemed like a good idea for keeping peace, but it actually made war more likely.

The major powers were split into two camps: the Triple Alliance Germany,AustriaHungary, andItalyGermany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy and the Triple Entente (France, Russia, and Great Britain). Germany's growing strength made France and Russia nervous, whilst Britain worried about Germany's expanding navy. Germany even had the Schlieffen Plan ready - a strategy to quickly invade France through Belgium, then turn to fight Russia.

Everything changed on 28th June 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was shot dead by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian student, in Sarajevo. Austria-Hungary was furious and gave Serbia an ultimatum: let Austrian officials investigate on Serbian soil or face war.

Quick Tip: Remember the date 28th June 1914 - it's when the spark that lit WWI happened!

War Breaks Out and the Home Front

When Serbia rejected Austria's demands, Austria declared war on 28th July 1914. The alliance system kicked in like dominoes falling - Germany backed Austria, so Germany asked Belgium for permission to march through and attack France. Belgium refused, but Germany invaded anyway, causing Britain to declare war on Germany.

Back in Britain, the home front changed dramatically. At first, the government relied on volunteers to join the army, but by 1916 they needed conscription (forced military service), starting with unmarried men. This created massive labour shortages.

Women stepped up in incredible ways, taking over jobs previously done only by men. They became bus conductors, railway workers, shop assistants, factory workers, and even policewomen. The Women's Land Army formed in 1917 to replace male farm workers, whilst others worked in dangerous munition factories making weapons and ammunition.

War also came to British soil through bombing raids. German aircraft and zeppelins brought terror from the skies - in 1917, fourteen bombers attacked London in broad daylight, showing that civilians were no longer safe from warfare.

Did You Know? WWI was the first war where civilians at home faced direct attack from enemy aircraft!

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
