Women in Nazi Germany: Roles and Expectations

Ever wondered how a government could completely reshape what it means to be a woman? The Nazis did exactly that, reducing women's roles to a simple slogan: 'Kinder, Kirche, Küche' (children, church, kitchen). This motto perfectly captured their belief that women existed primarily to be mothers and housekeepers.

Goebbels famously declared that "the mission of women is to be beautiful and bring children into the world" - and the Nazi state put serious policies behind these words. Women were discouraged from wearing makeup or following fashion trends, instead expected to wear their hair in buns or plaits to look 'natural' and wholesome.

The regime's obsession with creating the 'perfect' German race meant Aryan women were specifically taught to marry Aryan men to produce what they considered ideal children. This wasn't just social pressure - it was backed by disturbing programmes like the 'Law for the Prevention of Diseased Offspring', which allowed forced sterilisation of women with mental illness, hereditary diseases, or 'antisocial behaviour'.

Key Stat: The birth rate jumped from 970,000 babies in 1933 to 1,413,000 in 1939 - showing how effective (and concerning) these policies were.

The Nazis also promoted the idea that women should be 'sturdily built and healthy' specifically for childbearing, and that Weimar values were 'immoral' compared to their preferred domestic focus. Girls were taught through organisations like the League of German Maidens that homemaking was their highest calling, whilst virtuous and domestic qualities were prized above education or career ambitions.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

The Nazi regime had very specific ideas about what German women should be like and how they should live their lives. Their policies dramatically changed women's roles in society, focusing on motherhood, traditional values, and supporting the state's racial ideology.
