The Treaty of Versailles and Its Impact
Ever wondered why a peace treaty could destroy a government's reputation? The Treaty of Versailles did exactly that to Germany's new Weimar Republic. Article 231, known as the war guilt clause, forced Germany to accept full blame for starting World War I - something most Germans completely rejected.
This wasn't just about hurt feelings. War guilt meant real consequences: Germany lost territory, faced strict military limits, and had to pay massive reparations to the winning countries. The economic burden was crushing, making Germany's new democracy look weak and incompetent right from the start.
The treaty became known as a "diktat" because Germany had zero say in the negotiations. The Allies simply presented the terms and demanded Germany sign - no discussion, no compromise. Germans felt completely betrayed, and they blamed their new government for accepting such harsh treatment.

The "Stab-in-the-Back" Myth
Here's where things get really interesting - many Germans didn't believe they'd actually lost the war. The Dolchstoss myth claimed that Germany's army was still fighting strong but got betrayed by weak politicians at home. Even President Ebert told returning soldiers "No enemy defeated you!" in December 1918.
The armistice on 11th November 1918 made everything worse. Matthias Erzberger signed the surrender on behalf of the new republic, immediately connecting the Weimar government with Germany's defeat. Starting a new democracy with a surrender? Not exactly inspiring stuff.
This created the perfect storm: Germans felt humiliated by the treaty, betrayed by politicians, and convinced their army could have kept fighting. The November Criminals - politicians who signed the armistice and treaty - became scapegoats for everything that went wrong. The Weimar Republic never recovered from this terrible first impression.
