The Rise and Fall of the Weimar Republic
Germany's new democracy didn't get off to a great start. After the Kaiser fled in November 1918 and Germany signed the armistice, many Germans felt betrayed by the "stab in the back" theory - blaming politicians rather than military defeat for their loss.
The Weimar Constitution was finalised in 1919 and had some brilliant ideas for its time. Both men and women could vote at 20, and Germans enjoyed freedom of speech and religion. The president served seven-year terms, making the system seem stable.
However, the constitution had serious flaws that would later prove deadly. Article 48 allowed the president to make laws without parliament during emergencies - a loophole that would be exploited. Many army generals and judges were the same people who had served the Kaiser and actively opposed the new republic.
The timeline from 1918-1925 shows constant crisis: the Spartacist uprising (1919), Kapp Putsch (1920), hyperinflation (1923), and French occupation of the Ruhr. The Freikorps - private armies of ex-soldiers - added to the chaos by operating outside government control.

The Nazi Rise to Power
Everything changed after the Wall Street Crash of 29 October 1929, which triggered a global economic crisis that hit Germany especially hard. This disaster gave the Nazi Party the perfect opportunity to gain support amongst desperate Germans.
Hitler's personal appeal was massive - his charismatic speeches and promises impressed millions who were suffering economically. The SA (stormtroopers) grew to 600,000 members by 1932, organising intimidating parades that both impressed supporters and terrified opponents.
Joseph Goebbels proved to be a master of propaganda, using every trick in the book to spread the Nazi message. He created targeted posters for different audiences and even chartered planes to fly Hitler around Germany for up to five rallies per day - revolutionary campaign tactics for the time.
The 25-point plan outlined the Nazi vision: uniting all Germans into a greater Germany, destroying the Treaty of Versailles, restricting citizenship to people with "German blood," and nationalising major businesses. Meanwhile, women had gained political equality under Weimar, with 32 female deputies in parliament and new social freedoms like fashionable clothing and makeup.
Remember: The Nazis didn't just seize power - they exploited Germany's economic collapse and used modern propaganda techniques to win support legally before destroying democracy from within.
