Vikings and Normans: Medieval Invaders Who Changed England

Viking raids and settlement began around 789 AD when these seafaring warriors discovered England's growing wealth. Initially, they targeted monasteries for treasure, but by 865 AD, their strategy shifted completely - instead of quick raids, they launched a full-scale invasion.

The Vikings weren't just after gold and silver anymore. England's fertile soil and prosperous towns offered them a chance at a better life than they had back in Scandinavia. By 878 AD, entire Viking families were crossing the sea to settle as farmers, traders, and craftworkers.

King Alfred of Wessex tried paying the Vikings to leave, but when they launched a surprise attack, he fought back successfully. This led to the creation of Danelaw in 878 AD - essentially dividing England between Viking-controlled areas (Mercia, Northumbria, and East Anglia) and Anglo-Saxon lands.

Key Point: The Vikings ruled England for nearly 300 years until 1066 AD, when everything changed again with the Norman invasion.

William of Normandy believed he was the rightful king of England because Edward the Confessor had allegedly promised him the throne. When Harold Godwinson became king instead, William prepared a massive invasion with 7,000 well-trained soldiers and prefabricated castle parts.

The Battle of Hastings in October 1066 ended Viking rule forever. Harold was killed, and William was crowned on Christmas Day 1066. Norman rule brought dramatic changes: Norman French replaced Anglo-Saxon as the official language, new castles appeared across the landscape, and William even invited Jewish migrants to help fund his building projects.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
