Understanding America's Early Expansion

Ever wondered how America went from a tiny strip of land on the East Coast to the enormous country we know today? The period from 1789-1831 was absolutely crucial for American growth.

The original 13 colonies were just the beginning. After defeating Britain in the Revolutionary War, America gained control of huge territories that stretched all the way to the Mississippi River. But this was just the start of an incredible expansion story.

The map shows how different regions were added at different times - some through war, others through purchase, and many through simply taking land from Native Americans. Each new territory eventually became states, creating the foundation of modern America.

Quick Fact: By 1831, America had more than doubled in size from its original borders!

Taking Native American Lands by Force

Here's the uncomfortable truth about early American expansion - much of it involved stealing land from Native Americans who had lived there for centuries.

When Britain lost the Revolutionary War in 1783, they handed over 230 million acres to America. The problem? This land never belonged to Britain in the first place - it was Native American territory. The Ohio River became the dividing line between the Northwest and Southwest territories.

President Washington worried that Native Americans might team up with the British in Canada to fight back against America. So he spent massive amounts of money on wars against them. The Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 was the decisive moment - America defeated the Native Americans and forced their leaders to sign the Treaty of Greenville, giving up even more of their ancestral lands.

Remember: This forced expansion created long-lasting conflicts that would continue for decades.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
