The Stuarts: Kings, Conflict and Revolution

The Stuart dynasty began in 1603 when James I (already James VI of Scotland) took the English throne after Queen Elizabeth I died. The unpopular king narrowly escaped assassination in the famous Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby planned to blow up Parliament.

Religious tensions dominated this period. James's son Charles I believed in the Divine Right of Kings (that monarchs were chosen by God), which led to bitter conflicts with Parliament. These disagreements erupted into the English Civil War in 1642, with Royalists (supporters of the king) fighting against Parliamentarians (opponents). After the king's forces were defeated, Charles I was tried for treason and executed in 1649.

England then entered the Interregnum period without a monarch. Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector and essentially ruled England as a military dictator. After Cromwell's death, the monarchy was restored in 1660 with Charles II. Later, his catholic brother James II was overthrown in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when Protestant William of Orange became king.

Did you know? During this period, Matthew Hopkins named himself "Witch-finder General" and was responsible for the execution of over 200 people accused of witchcraft, exploiting the superstitious beliefs of the time.

The Stuart era also brought disasters like the Great Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Yet despite these challenges, it was also the beginning of the Enlightenment, when science and reason became increasingly important in understanding the world.
