The Transatlantic Slave Trade

The transatlantic slave trade was the largest forced migration in human history, and it's crucial you understand its massive scale. Between 1500 and 1800, roughly 12-15 million Africans were kidnapped and transported to work as slaves in the Americas and Britain.

Slavery meant being treated as property rather than as a human being. Slaves were stripped of all rights, forced to work without pay, and could be bought, sold, or abused at their owner's will. They were torn from their homes and families, facing a lifetime of exploitation.

The trade made huge profits for many people involved in what became known as the triangular trade. African warlords, factory owners, ship builders, captains, bankers, and plantation owners all got rich from this system. Even famous explorers like Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake owned slave ships.

Remember: Over 2 million Africans died just during the sea voyage - that's before they even reached their destination as slaves.

Life on the Slave Ships

The journey from Africa to the Americas was called the Middle Passage, and it was absolutely horrific. Imagine being crammed into a dark, filthy ship for weeks or months with barely any room to move.

The conditions on slave ships were deliberately brutal. Africans were chained together in shackles and packed into spaces below deck like cargo, not people. The Brookes slave ship diagram from 1787 shows exactly how tightly humans were squeezed together in these floating prisons.

Sickness spread rapidly in these cramped, dirty conditions. When people died (which happened constantly), their bodies were simply thrown overboard. The ship crews punished anyone who resisted with neck collars, beatings, or even throwing them into the sea.

Those who survived the voyage faced being sold like objects to the highest bidder at slave markets. Families were deliberately split apart, and survivors faced a lifetime of unpaid labour in harsh conditions on plantations.
