The Mystery of Microorganisms
Back in the early 1800s, people had no clue what germs or bacteria actually were. Scientists could see these tiny creatures under powerful microscopes (magnifying up to 1000 times!), but they were completely baffled about their purpose.
Most people believed in spontaneous generation - the weird idea that microorganisms just magically appeared when things rotted. They thought this explained how maggots suddenly showed up on decaying meat too.
Instead of blaming germs for illness, people thought diseases came from miasma - basically "bad air." This seems mad now, but remember, they had no idea that invisible creatures could make you sick!
Quick Fact: The word "germs" actually comes from "germinating" - like seeds sprouting!
Pasteur's Brilliant Experiment
In the 1850s, Louis Pasteur had a game-changing idea. What if germs weren't created by decay, but actually caused it? He suspected these microorganisms were floating around in the air, waiting to land on things.
His famous swan neck flask experiment proved this brilliantly. Pasteur put nutrient-rich broth in a specially shaped flask and boiled it to kill existing germs. The curved neck trapped airborne microbes, keeping the liquid fresh.
When he broke the neck to let germs in, the broth quickly went rotten. Even more cleverly, he tested air from different locations across France - dusty city air caused more decay than clean mountain air.
Remember: This simple experiment destroyed the idea of spontaneous generation forever!
Germ Theory Changes Everything
In 1862, Pasteur published his revolutionary germ theory with four key points: air contains microbes, some places have more microbes than others, these microbes cause decay, and heat can kill them.
This led to pasteurisation - the process of heating liquids to kill harmful bacteria. Every time you drink milk or juice, you're benefiting from Pasteur's discovery!
Pasteur then proved germs caused disease by studying sick silkworms in 1865. This breakthrough made him realise that microorganisms could make humans ill too, launching modern medicine.
He didn't stop there - Pasteur became a pioneer in vaccine development, starting with chicken cholera. His work laid the foundation for preventing countless diseases that once killed millions.
