Structure of the Atlantic Slave Trade
The Atlantic Slave Trade operated as a brutal but organised system that connected three continents. European traders developed this network to maximise profits by moving different goods and people around the Atlantic Ocean.
This wasn't just random trading - it followed a carefully planned route that took advantage of ocean currents and wind patterns. The system was designed to ensure ships never sailed empty, making every journey profitable for European merchants.
Key Point: The Atlantic Slave Trade was a structured system, not random acts of slavery - this organisation made it devastatingly effective.
The Four Stages of Triangular Trade
Understanding the triangular trade is crucial because it shows how systematic and profitable this horror was. The journey started with the outward passage from Britain to Africa, carrying manufactured goods like guns, cloth, alcohol, and iron tools that took around 60 days.
Once ships arrived in Africa, these European goods were traded for captured people who had been enslaved. The ships were then loaded with hundreds of African captives for the next devastating stage.
The middle passage was the most horrific part - the 38-day journey across the Atlantic where enslaved people were packed into ship holds in appalling conditions. Many died from disease, starvation, or despair during this crossing.
Remember: Each stage was designed to maximise profit whilst treating human beings as cargo.
Completing the Triangle
After surviving the middle passage, enslaved people were sold in the Caribbean and Americas for enormous profits. This wasn't the end of the journey for the ships though - they still had one more profitable leg to complete.
The home passage saw ships reloaded with raw materials and crops produced by slave labour. Sugar, cotton, and tobacco filled the ships for the 50-60 day journey back to Britain.
This final stage completed the triangle and showed how the whole system was interconnected. The profits from selling people bought the raw materials, which were then processed in British factories and sold back to Africa to buy more enslaved people.
