Migration to Britain: 1945-Present

Ever wondered how Britain became so diverse? The story starts right after World War II, when people from across the globe began making Britain their home for vastly different reasons.

West Indians were among the first major group to arrive in the late 1940s. The 1948 Nationality Act gave all Commonwealth citizens British passports, making it easy to come. Britain desperately needed workers to rebuild after the war, especially for London Transport and the NHS. However, they faced brutal racism - the 1958 Notting Hill riots showed just how hostile some communities were. Despite this, West Indians brought incredible cultural changes: new music, food, and eventually the famous Notting Hill Carnival.

Asian migrants in the 1960s and 70s had a different story. Many were forced to flee violence during the partition of India and Pakistan, whilst others came for work in Bradford's mills or London's garment factories. They built strong communities with their own temples, mosques, and banking systems. The 1976 Grunwick Strike became a symbol of solidarity when white workers supported Asian colleagues fighting for fair treatment.

Remember: The Commission for Racial Equality was set up in 1976 to combat discrimination - this shows how seriously these issues were being taken by the government.

EU migrants after 2004 came for completely different reasons - economic opportunity rather than escaping persecution. They often took jobs in construction, farming, and care work. Many were highly educated but accepted lower-paid positions, which sometimes created tension with British workers who felt their jobs were being threatened.

Refugees and asylum seekers continue arriving today, fleeing wars in places like Syria or persecution in countries like Iran. Whilst Britain signed the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees, the reality has often been harsh detention centres and hostile media coverage, showing that challenges around migration continue.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

After 1945, Britain became a multicultural society as millions of migrants arrived from around the world. Each group brought their own reasons for coming, faced unique challenges, and contributed to transforming British culture in ways we still see today.
