Hippocrates: The Father of Modern Medicine
Meet Hippocrates, the Greek doctor born around 460 BC who completely revolutionised how people thought about getting ill. Before him, most folks believed that angry gods or evil spirits caused diseases—imagine explaining your flu to your parents that way!
Hippocrates introduced the four humours theory, which suggested your body contained four vital fluids: blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. When these got out of balance, you'd fall sick. Each humour was linked to personality traits too—blood made you cheerful (sanguine), phlegm made you calm (phlegmatic), black bile made you moody (melancholic), and yellow bile made you angry (choleric).
The treatments were quite intense by today's standards. Doctors used bloodletting with leeches, forced patients to vomit, and prescribed specific diets to rebalance the humours. If you had too much phlegm, they'd give you spicy food to heat things up!

Galen: Building on Ancient Wisdom
Galen, a Roman physician from AD 129, took Hippocrates' ideas and ran with them for centuries. His Theory of Opposites was brilliantly simple—treat cold illnesses with warmth, dry conditions with moisture, and so on.
Since dissecting humans was forbidden, Galen studied anatomy by cutting up animals instead. This led to some pretty impressive discoveries, like proving that the brain controls speech. However, it also caused some major blunders—he incorrectly thought blood flowed through tiny holes in the heart and believed your jawbone was actually two separate bones.
What's fascinating is how Galen viewed the body as self-healing. A runny nose? That's just your body getting rid of excess phlegm. Nosebleed? Your body's clever way of removing too much blood. Doctors would carefully observe these natural symptoms to decide on treatments.
Mind-blowing fact: Galen's theories dominated medicine for over 1,500 years until scientists like Louis Pasteur discovered that germs, not humour imbalances, actually cause diseases!
