The Build-Up to War
Ever wondered how one assassination could trigger a world war? It's because Europe was already a tinderbox of competing nations, each trying to outdo the others. Four major forces were pushing countries towards conflict.
Imperialism was like a massive game of Monopoly, but with real countries. Powerful nations wanted to build huge empires by taking control of other countries. They didn't always use armies - sometimes economic pressure or political influence did the trick. The goal was simple: grab as much land and power as possible.
Militarism meant countries believed society should work like the army - with strict discipline and strong military values. Nations were obsessed with building bigger, better armed forces. Everyone wanted the most impressive military, which created a dangerous arms race across Europe.
Key Point: Think of alliances as friendship pacts with serious consequences. Countries promised to help defend each other if war broke out. This meant that if one nation got attacked, their allies would automatically join the fight - turning small conflicts into massive wars.
The Final Triggers
You've probably felt proud of your country during the Olympics or major sporting events - that's a mild version of nationalism. In the early 1900s, this feeling was much more intense and dangerous. People were fiercely loyal to their nations and ethnic groups, sometimes to the point of hatred towards others.
Slavic peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina desperately wanted to break free from Austria-Hungary and join Serbia instead. This created huge tension in the region, with different ethnic groups pulling in opposite directions.
Then came the event that changed everything: the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. In June 1914, a Serbian terrorist group called the Black Hand decided to kill Austria-Hungary's heir to the throne. Their first attempt with a grenade failed, but later that day, Gavrilo Princip shot both the Archduke and his wife dead in Sarajevo.
Remember This: This assassination was just the match that lit the fuse - all those underlying causes (imperialism, militarism, alliances, and nationalism) turned a single murder into a global catastrophe.
