The Nazi Rise Through Crisis
Think about how quickly things can change in politics - the Nazis went from winning just 12 seats in 1928 to an incredible 230 seats by July 1932. This wasn't just luck; it was the perfect storm of economic disaster and fear.
The Great Depression hit Germany particularly hard, and desperate people started looking towards extreme solutions. The Nazi Party cleverly positioned itself as the answer to Germany's problems, winning over middle and upper-class voters who were terrified of a communist takeover.

By 1932, the Weimar Republic was falling apart. Chancellor Brüning tried to maintain stability, but when President Hindenburg (who was 84 years old) ran for re-election, Hitler emerged as a serious challenger. Despite Hindenburg's victory with 19 million votes, Hitler's 13 million votes showed just how popular the Nazis had become.
The political elite thought they could use the Nazis for their own purposes. Von Papen became Chancellor in May 1932, with General Schleicher believing they could control Hitler like "children had to be led by the hand" - this would prove to be a fatal miscalculation.

The Final Steps to Power
December 1932 marked the beginning of the end for German democracy. Schleicher replaced Von Papen as Chancellor, thinking the Nazi threat had decreased after their vote dropped in November. But politics moves fast, and Schleicher quickly discovered he had virtually no support in the Reichstag.
When Schleicher desperately asked Hindenburg to let him rule as a military dictator, the old president refused. This created the perfect opportunity for a comeback - but not the one anyone expected.

Von Papen saw his chance for revenge and proposed what seemed like a brilliant solution: make Hitler Chancellor but keep him controlled by appointing Von Papen as Vice-Chancellor. In January 1933, this fateful decision was made.
